001 / The Brief

Nobody actually wants a frictionless life. What anyone wants is a life where the difficulty sits in the things they chose — hard training, work at the edge of competence, the conversation they have been avoiding — and almost nowhere else: the keys, the process that breaks every third time, the bill nobody cancelled, the decision re—made every week because it was never once made. Most people have it the other way round and have never sat down and looked. This is the looking, built to operate. Six passes: a census that refuses vague entries, because vague suffering cannot be engineered away; four boxes and the three ways people misfile into them; the collapse of a long symptom list into the short list of causes underneath it; chosen difficulty separated from accidental difficulty; and an ordered ladder of interventions whose top three rungs almost everybody skips. It ends in a printable architecture sheet. Nothing is transmitted — the whole audit lives in the reader's own browser.

A self-administered friction audit, built to operate rather than to be read: a census that refuses vague entries, the four boxes (control, influence, accept, exit) with the three characteristic misfilings, the collapse of a long symptom list into the short list of mechanisms underneath it, chosen difficulty separated from accidental difficulty, and an ordered ladder of interventions — eliminate, automate, delegate, standardise, batch, constrain, relocate, renegotiate, accept — ending in a printable one-page architecture sheet. Everything the reader types stays in their own browser.
